How we work

A few people drawing water from a well.

Hundreds of millions of people worldwide lack access to energy, and most live in countries where conflict and climate change are causing economic crises and food and water insecurity, while also destabilizing governance. Living without energy access already makes their lives tough and dangerous, and climate change is making it worse — hitting these communities hardest despite them contributing the least to global carbon emissions.

Energy access transforms lives and livelihoods, and renewable energy is often the most cost-effective and accessible resource to meet communities’ needs. But delivering access where it is needed most calls for a comprehensive and coordinated approach that can be scaled.

Mercy Corps accelerates progress toward a more sustainable, climate resilient and equitable future for all through Energy 4 Impact, our energy innovation platform. We aim to accelerate global energy access and leverage this access to catalyze food security, economic opportunity, water security, and peaceful, effective governance across the world’s most vulnerable communities.

We do this in two powerful steps: by first building inclusive energy markets, and then leveraging those markets to accelerate sustainable, climate resilient development and humanitarian assistance. Our platform combines multidisciplinary expertise, local know-how, and systems-centered approaches, coupled with global best practices in energy innovations, technologies, and business models.

Our market-led approach

The private sector plays a pivotal role in achieving sustainable and durable impact. That’s why we strive to mobilize resources that empower local businesses and markets to expand energy access – enabling communities to increase productivity, offer vital services, create sustainable jobs, and grow local economies that are inclusive, resilient, and low-carbon. We provide enterprises with technical expertise, strategic business and operational advice, and financial access support, to foster robust markets for affordable, innovative, and climate-smart energy solutions.

Last mile inclusion that prioritizes local businesses shapes our work to ensure energy access can unlock the most impact in the communities we serve. Gender-responsive and socially inclusive strategies are at the heart of our work. We are committed to ensuring equal participation and benefits for all, while addressing the specific energy needs and challenges faced by women and marginalized groups.
