Energy 4 Impact is Mercy Corps’ market systems program for clean energy access. We work to turn emerging clean energy markets into self-sustaining ones, opening the door to lasting energy access, stronger incomes, and climate-resilient livelihoods. We combine the depth of a specialist advisory firm with the reach and credibility of Mercy Corps, working across the full market system, from policy to enterprise, finance, and evidence, in places where few others operate.

Access to clean energy drives economic growth and productivity. It powers the farms, businesses, and services that local economies depend on, and strengthens livelihoods, food, and water security across communities.

Equitable access promotes inclusion and gender equality, so women, youth, and underrepresented groups can take part in the economic opportunities clean energy creates.

Mercy Corps works in over 40 countries around the world. We’re committed to creating global change through local impact: 95% of our team members are from the countries where they work.

Our impact

We have reached over 20 million people across priority African markets with access to energy, helping transform lives and livelihoods across the continent. We have driven this by strengthening the conditions markets need, building partnerships, and generating the evidence that guides better decisions. We have supported over 16,000 enterprises, mobilized $239 million in private capital, and helped avert over 14 million tons of carbon emissions, enabling communities to meet their energy needs more sustainably. Our measure of success is private investment flowing into markets once thought too risky, and clean energy reaching the communities those markets can now serve, so they can cope, adapt, and prosper.
